Stevensville's Historic Sites Close for the Winter After November 7. Here's How to Spend the Last Saturday.

October 15, 2026

The Kent Island Heritage Society opens its historic sites on the first Saturday of each month from April through November. That puts the last open day of 2026 on Saturday, November 7. The same Saturday brings the 11th Historic Stevensville Car Show to Love Point Road and the Eastern Shore Writers Association's 2nd annual Holiday Book Festival to Cult Classic Brewing, according to The HdG Beacon.

Stevensville's largest public day is also the day the season ends. For most of the year the district opens in small pieces: one Saturday a month, a few buildings at a time. On November 7 everything opens together for one afternoon, and after that most of it stays closed until spring. It's also the first year the season ends with the new Kent Island Heritage Center on the walking route.

The calendar narrows before it closes

The Heritage Center has kept longer hours this fall than the older sites. According to the Kent Island Heritage Society, the museum is open every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. from September 5 through October 31. Visit Queen Anne's lists one more opening after that, on the November First Saturday, and says the center also opens by special request.

Counting from today, October 12, that leaves four scheduled public openings at the museum this year.

Date What's open Hours
Saturday, Oct. 17 Heritage Center Noon–4 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 24 Heritage Center Noon–4 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 31 Heritage Center Noon–4 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 7 Heritage Center plus all First Saturday sites, car show, book festival Sites noon–4 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 6 Society membership luncheon and election of officers Members' event

The Society's 2026 calendar doesn't list any public site openings after November 7. If you've been meaning to bring a houseguest or a grandchild through the Cray House, this is the last window until April.

What's inside the new schoolhouse

The Heritage Center sits at 310 Love Point Road in a renovated 1870 Queen Anne's County schoolhouse. It is both a museum and the Society's headquarters. The grand opening was Saturday, May 16, 2026, as The HdG Beacon reported in July.

According to the Society, the exhibits include:

  • Displays and artifacts on the island's original Native American residents
  • The founding of the island by William Claiborne, plus a millstone from the Crayford Plantation where he lived
  • The ship's bell from the John M. Dennis, the largest ferry in the Matapeake fleet before the Bay Bridge
  • The original Kent Island duck decoy collection documented in the book "The Forgotten Seven"
  • School artifacts and stories from the years the building served as a public school

In the Beacon's July coverage, the upstairs research library was still planned for a later date, so ask the docents whether it's open before you plan around it.

The center is a good place to start on November 7. The John M. Dennis bell comes from the ferries that served the island before the Bay Bridge, and train service on Kent Island, which ran through the Stevensville station down the road, ended when that bridge opened in 1952.

The route the car show follows

The car show runs on the streets the Heritage Center describes. The Historic Stevensville Arts and Entertainment District says about 80 classics go on display each November, on Stevensville's streets and on the green around the Cray House and the Old Stevensville Train Station. The show is put on in partnership with the Kent Island Cruisers.

Here's how the day runs, based on the event flyer as reported by the Beacon:

  1. 9 to 10:15 a.m. Display vehicles register near Amalfi's for $20. Show cars enter from Main Street at 325 Main St., continue to 121 E. Main St., then turn toward Amalfi's at 401 Love Point Road and park along Love Point Road and Cray House Green. The first 100 registrants get dash plaques and flags.
  2. Noon to 4 p.m. The Society opens the Cray House, the Train Station and Caboose, the Old Bank, the Old Post Office and Historic Christ Church for free tours.
  3. 2 p.m. Trophies are awarded. The flyer lists 35 trophies for historic stock and modified vehicles, a large Best of Show award from the Kent Island Cruisers and a Commissioner's Cup that the Cruisers also sponsor. Participants vote.
  4. 3:15 p.m. The car show closes, rain or shine.

Visit Queen Anne's lists the show as free to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and mentions music, car-art activities for kids, dancing and food vendors. The early start time applies to cars arriving. Spectators can plan around the 10 a.m. listing.

The buildings on the tour are worth knowing before you go. The Society describes the Cray House as an example of post-and-plank construction. Nora Cray's heirs donated the house and lot in 1975. The Stevensville Station was the first stop out of Love Point on the Queen Anne's Railroad, and the last train ride on Kent Island ended when the Bay Bridge opened in 1952. The caboose was built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between 1924 and 1929 and was donated to the Society in 2006. At Historic Christ Church the flyer lists free tours, vendors, the Centreville Scale Modelers Club and a bake sale by the Kent Island Federation of Arts.

You'll notice more along the walk this year. The county installed 18 Historic Stevensville banners on the stretch from the Kent Island Library through downtown and along Love Point Road, ahead of Kent Island Day this spring.

The afternoon moves to Shopping Center Road

The Holiday Book Festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. at Cult Classic Brewing, 1169 Shopping Center Road, so you can tour the sites and visit the festival in the same afternoon. Admission is free. The Eastern Shore Writers Association says 40 writers from across the region will bring books for children, teens and adults. The lineup includes poets, memoirists, local historians, short story writers and novelists, with "100s of Books" across two large exhibit rooms. There's a book-themed scavenger hunt with free books given away through the afternoon, and the festival collects donations for Poetry X Hunger. The association asks guests to RSVP on its festival page.

The brewery has also grown this fall. Cult Classic's events page says a brand-new 250-seat room officially opens with the "Funny Business at Cult Classic" comedy night on October 24, with ticket prices kept low as a thank-you to local audiences. The writers association notes that Cult Classic regularly hosts book clubs, author readings and literary events. Its November calendar on Visit Queen Anne's backs that up, with Books & Beers on November 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and the People's Choice BBQ Classic on November 14.

Parking, food and restrooms

The flyer and the festival organizers cover most of the practical questions:

  • Parking: Free public parking for the car show is at Stevensville Middle School, 610 Main St., and Kent Island Elementary School, 110 Elementary Way. Accessible parking is behind the Heritage Society museum at 310 Love Point Road, entered at Main Street and lower Love Point Road. The book festival has free parking at Cult Classic.
  • Car show food vendors: Tasty Toucan, Peace of Cake, Amalfi Coast and Ground Work Coffee & Juice. Food and drinks will also be for sale at the book festival.
  • Restrooms: The Old Bank, the Old Post Office and the Christ Church Parish Hall, plus portable toilets at Cray House Green and the Skate Park.

The vendors' regular storefronts are all a short walk from the Heritage Center, which helps if you arrive before the show fills up. Ground Work Coffee and Juice at 111 Cockey Lane appears on Visit Queen Anne's Saturday itinerary as a downtown stop for coffee, smoothies and breakfast. Peace of Cake at 314 Love Point Road, a few addresses from the Heritage Center, is listed for take-out pastries and baked goods. Amalfi Coast Italian & Wine Bar at 401 Love Point Road, where cars register, opens at 11 a.m. and has outdoor seating.

What stays open after the doors close

The Society's buildings close after November 7, but Historic Christ Church at 121 E. Main Street keeps the district busy into December. Its free Holiday Concert & Art Market is on Saturday, November 28. The description lists local musicians from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by arts-and-crafts vendors, light finger food and photos with Santa and Mary Elf in the Parish Hall next door from 6 to 8 p.m. The listing's heading shows a shorter 5 to 6:30 p.m. window, so check the hours before you go. Christ Church also lists a free, family-friendly Christmas-season concert by the Westminster Ringers on December 12, 2026, at 2 p.m.

When you're out on Love Point Road on November 7, it's easy to see the old village around you: the station, the Cray House and the schoolhouse with its bell, all within a few blocks.
